Today, Azerbaijan celebrates National Salvation Day.
32 years ago - in his speech at the session of the National Assembly (Milli Majlis) held on 15 June, 1993, National Leader Heydar Aliyev announced the future development strategy of Azerbaijani statehood, and today has entered the history of Azerbaijan as National Salvation Day, and Azerbaijani statehood was saved from the threat of extinction.
On that day, Heydar Aliyev, who returned to power for the second time at the request of the Azerbaijani people, was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet. Thus, the long-standing tension and conflict subsided, and the country was saved from the threat of civil war and disintegration.
On 20 June, 1993, Heydar Aliyev held a briefing for local and foreign journalists to convey the realities of Azerbaijan to the world community, and on 21 June, he met with diplomats from a number of countries. The policy pursued in this area brought the republic out of the information blockade. The opinion formed in the world about Azerbaijan changed in a positive direction. It was in such a complex political situation that the great potential of Heydar Aliyev became the guarantor of Azerbaijan's independence. The personality of the National Leader, his unique political management skills, determination and charisma put an end to the political crisis and Azerbaijan's integration into the world community began.
In 1997, the deputies of the National Assembly (Milli Majlis) proposed to include June 15 in the calendar as the National Salvation Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the parliament approved this proposal. Since then, the return of Heydar Aliyev to power has been celebrated as the National Salvation Day.
