Today is Victory Day in Azerbaijan

Today is the fifth anniversary of the historic Victory of Azerbaijan in the Second Karabakh War - Victory Day.

Victory Day was established by a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on 3 December, 2020.

In response to Armenia's provocation and next military aggression, the Azerbaijani Army launched the Patriotic War on 27 September, 2020 to liberate our lands from occupation, force Armenia to peace, fulfill the demands of the UN Security Council resolutions, return internally displaced persons to their native lands, and restore justice. The entire Azerbaijani people mobilized and stood in solidarity for this sacred cause.

During the 44-day battles, the brave Azerbaijani Army liberated 5 cities, 4 settlements, and 286 villages from occupation. Thus, Jabrayil city and 90 villages of the district, Fuzuli city and 53 villages of the district, Zangilan city, Minjivan, Aghband, Bartaz settlements of the district and 52 villages, Hadrut settlement and 35 villages of the Khojavand district, 3 villages of the Tartar district, Gubadli city and 41 villages of the district, 9 villages of the Khojaly district, Shusha city, 3 villages of the Lachin district, as well as several strategic heights in the Aghdara and Murovdagh directions, and Bartaz, Sighirt, Shukurataz heights and 5 more nameless heights in Zangilan were cleared of the enemy.

The victories gained by Azerbaijan in the military field, especially the liberation of Shusha from enemy captivity, played a decisive role in the fate of the war, and Armenia's admission of its defeat resulted in its capitulation, forcing Armenia to return the Kalbajar, Aghdam and Lachin districts to Azerbaijan.

On the night of 9-10 November, 2020, a trilateral statement was signed between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Russian President Vladimir Putin on a complete ceasefire and all military operations in the conflict zone. This marked the end of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Congratulations on your victory, Azerbaijan!
