Republican Scientific Conference on the Defence of the Flora of the Western Region was held in Ganja
A Republican Scientific Conference on the topic “The Impact of Contemporary Climate Change on the Vegetation of the Western Region of Azerbaijan” was held in the Ganja Branch of ANAS, organized by the Ganja Botanical Garden of the Ministry of Science and Education.
The two-day scientific conference was attended by scientists and researchers representing scientific research and higher education institutions of Baku and Nakhchivan, in addition to Ganja.
Before the event, an exhibition dedicated to the achievements of ecologically oriented scientific institutions operating in Ganja was viewed.
Opening the conference with an introductory speech, Member of the Presidium of ANAS, Chairman of the Ganja Branch of ANAS, Academician Fuad Aliyev greeted the participants. He evaluated the speech of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, at the recently held solemn meeting on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of ANAS, as a historical event.
He characterized the head of state's calls as a program document for our scientists.
Head of the Botany Department of Ganja State University, Corresponding Member of ANAS Vagif Novruzov drew attention to the global ecological crisis in his speech. Emphasizing that the century we live in is remembered for its ruthless behavior towards nature, the academic said that global climate change has caused serious consequences mainly due to anthropogenic factors.
The plenary session of the conference was also attended by Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the “Dendrology Garden” Public Legal Entity (PLE) under the Chairman of the Executive Power of Baku City, Doctor of Philosophy in Biology, Associate Professor Samira Baghirova, Director of the Botanical Garden (Ganja) of the Ministry of Science and Education Nizami Naghiyev, Director of the Institute of Bioresources, Doctor of Sciences, Associate Professor Imran Gasimov, Professor of the Institute of Radiation Problems, Doctor of Biological Sciences Elmikhan Jafarov, Director of the Heydar Aliyev Park of Ganja Ilyas Mammadov and other scholars.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dendrology Garden, Doctor of Philosophy in Biology, Associate Professor Samira Baghirova provided information about the activities of the organization she leads. She said that the Dendrology Garden conducts extensive research on the restoration of the gene pool of the republic's natural and cultural flora, the efficient use of plant resources, as well as adaptation and introduction.
S.Baghirova noted that the Dendrology Garden closely cooperates with similar organizations operating in Azerbaijan and abroad. According to her, in accordance with the cooperation agreement signed with several local and foreign scientific institutions, joint expeditionary research is carried out by the parties, as well as cooperation in the exchange of plant materials and herbariums.
The conference continued its work in 7 sections covering the topics of “The current state of biological diversity of the western region of Azerbaijan and its effective use”, “Ways of studying and effective use of medicinally crucial useful plants”, “Rare and endangered plants and contemporary biotechnology”, “Introduction and reintroduction in the protection of biodiversity”, “Global climate change and its impact on flora”, “The current state of landscape design in the protection of greenery in the country” and “The impact of climate change on agriculture”.
Active participants of the republican conference were presented with certificates.
