Decreasing the effects of global climate changes was discussed at the international conference in Guba
An international scientific-practical conference was held in Guba under the joint organization of the Scientific Research Institute of Fruit and Tea Growing of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Public Legal Entity "Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Growing" on the topic "Providing Sustainable Agricultural Production through Adaptation and Mitigation of the Effects of Global Climate Change".
The conference was attended by scolars and experts from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Croatia, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
The basic purpose of the conference was to bring together interested parties and exchange knowledge and experiences, competences in the direction of reducing the negative effects of climate change on the fruit and vegetable growing areas of agriculture and exploring ways to adapt to the current situation.
In addition, the establishment of cooperative relations between the organizing institutes (Scientific Research Institute Fruit and Tea Growing; "Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Growing" PLE) and relevant enterprises operating in the field of agriculture of various countries, further strengthening of existing relations, joint scientific-discussion of research projects is also one of the priority issues in holding the conference.
Ilham Garagurbanli, director of the Scientific Research Institute of Fruit and Tea Growing, make a speech at the conference, said that global climate change has started to affect the field of fruit growing as well. Decreasing and adaptation of these impacts is one of the main duties facing us in present.
"Fruit growing is an crucial field in the agrarian economy of Azerbaijan and is developing at a high speed in recent times. Currently, the fruit growing in Azerbaijan can be compared with the fruit growing in developed countries, and our main goal is to increase the production of high-quality fruit that meets the requirements of the market and is resistant to diseases and pests," said I.Garagurbanli.
Elmar Allahverdiyev, Director of the Board of the " Science Research Institute of Vegetable Growing" public legal entity, emphasized that new approaches have been started in the conduct of scientific research works in order to reduce the effects of global climate changes.
He added that powerful defence mechanisms against pathogens are being developed using genomic data and molecular markers, which are faster and more effective than traditional breeding methods. "Over time, the acquisition of high-quality genotypes resistant to insects, viruses, bacteria and fungi, and abiotic stress conditions, with a high yield in a single field, will lead to less use of traditional methods."
Speakers at the conference make a speech that for the sustainability of these works, the quality of cultivated varieties should be increased, products with high added value should be included in the cultivation systems. The impact of new applications on existing plant physiology should be well analyzed and plant diversity should be preserved while adapting to innovations. It is also very vital to conduct research aimed at reducing and even eliminating the damage of diseases and pests occurring in plant physiology. The rapid decrease of available water resources in the world and in the republic has made the widespread use of contemporary irrigation systems in agriculture a necessity.
Make a speech at the event, Samira Baghirova, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Public Legal Entity (PLE) "Dendrology Garden" under the authority of the head of the Executive Power of Baku City, PhD in Biology, Associate Professor who said that at the event, climate change is one of the global problems currently affecting the world.
"Climate changes limit people's food security and access to water at both regional and global levels, cause hunger, poverty and other severe socio-economic consequences, intensify migration, increase infectious and chronic diseases.
Our country supports international efforts to mitigate the effects of global climate change. The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the 19th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the 6th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement will be held this year in Baku, the capital of our country. Dealing with the consequences of global climate change involves reducing the effects of climate change or climate change mitigation-adaptation.
S.Baghirova said that "Dendrology Garden" public legal entity under the authority of the head of the Executive Power of Baku City supports the implementation of national priorities for green growth of our country:
"On 15 November of last year, the Agrarian Innovation Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Scientific Research Institute of Fruit and Tea Growing, the Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture, the Scientific Research Institute of Plant Protection and Technical Plants, the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetables Growing, the Ecology of the National Aerospace Agency of the Ministry of Defense Industry Institute, Institute of Scientific Research Aerospace Informatics, Institute of Space Research of Natural Resources, Special Designer Bureau of Space Equipment Manufacturing, Institute of Genetic Resources of the Ministry of Science and Education, Institute of Microbiology, Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, Institute of Radiation Problems, Scientific Research Institute of Reclamation and New Azerbaijan Technical University a memorandum on scientific research cooperation was signed between the Institute of Materials and Nanotechnologies.
Our main goal is to carry out joint projects, scientific-research works, projects, scientific-practical conferences, training and symposiums in the direction of developing skills in relevant fields, taking into account the existence of a wide scientific-production base and experienced qualified personnel of the parties.
In accordance with the established rules, conditions are created for doctoral students and doctoral students to undergo industrial training at the bases of the enterprises that have signed the contract.
At the same time, in order to strengthen the scientific and technical potential, we cooperate with other scientific and educational institutions, explore opportunities for creating new business relations in relevant fields, and plan to hold conferences and seminars on topics of mutual interest".
