On 1 September, 1939, Germany of fascism invaded Poland based on the lightning-fast “Barbarossa” plan. Thus commenced the Second World War, which went down in human history as the bloodiest war. On 22 June, 1941, Hitler's Germany attacked the USSR, which included Azerbaijan. The war ended on 9 May, 1945, with the lowering of the fascist flag over the Reichstag building in Berlin and the raising of the USSR flag.
660 thousand people from Azerbaijan participated in this war. Azerbaijani divisions fought from the Caucasus to Berlin, about 130 Azerbaijanis were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, 30 people were awarded the Order of Honor, 170 thousand of our compatriots were awarded various orders and medals of the USSR.
Azerbaijani oil was also one of the decisive factors in World War II. Thus, in 1941, the largest amount of oil in the history of Azerbaijan was produced - 23.5 million tons, which constituted 71.4% of the oil produced in the USSR. In total, during the war years, Azerbaijani petrol workers supplied the country with 75 million tons of petrol, 22 million tons of gasoline and other oil products.
