Shepherdia plant brought from Zagatala has been introduced to Dendrology Garden
On 31 March, 2026, the Shepherdia (Shepherdia argentea (Pursh) Nutt.) plant brought from the North-West region of Azerbaijan - Zagatala district was included in the collection of the Dendrology Garden. It should be noted that the Shepherdia (Shepherdia argentea (Pursh) Nutt.) plant, known as the “Silver Shepherdia”, attracts attention such as the natural source rich in vitamins and minerals.
The 10–15 cm long cuttings of the plant, brought by the staff of the “Plants of Economic Importance” laboratory of the “Dendrology Garden” public legal entity (PLE), were planted in pots filled with humus-rich soil.
Regular agrotechnical care was provided to the plants kept in greenhouse conditions (temperature 17°C, relative humidity 72%).
On 14 April, the first shoots were observed in the plants.
It should be noted that Shepherdia argentea belongs to the genus Shepherdia of the family Elaeagnaceae. The fruits of the plant are used for food, have a sour taste and are distinguished by their red color with white spots. They contain bioactive substances such as carotenoids, anthocyanins, catechins and tannins, which have a positive effect on increasing the elasticity of blood vessels.
The seeds of the plant contain 8–10% oil. In addition, nitrogen-fixing bacteria living in its roots increase soil fertility and perform the function of natural fertilizer.
Currently, it is planned to conduct phenological observations on the species, investigate its medicinal and economic significance. At the same time, it is planned to obtain essential oils from the leaves of the plant and study their chemical composition in the future.
