Staff of the “Dendrology Garden” PLE have carried out research on saline soils in the Zira area

On 14 May, 2026, employees of the “Ecology and Acclimatization” laboratory of the “Dendrology Garden” public legal entity (PLE) under the authority  of the head of the Executive Power of Baku City carried out monitoring work in the Zira settlement area in accordance with the annual research plan to study saline soils in the Absheron district. During the research, the natural and cultivated vegetation of the area was examined and it was determined that drought-resistant herbaceous plants such as wormwood, saltwort, valerian, coastal bonsai, cattail, meadowsweet, and daphne are widely distributed in natural conditions.
Of the cultivated plants, pyramidal, horizontal and large-fruited cypress, Eldar pine, plane tree, mulberry, decorative olive, eucalyptus, pomegranate, iyda, chamaerops palm, Japanese germashov, grapes, as well as almonds and olives in plantations were planted in roadside areas.
Samples were taken from the 0-30 cm soil layer at coordinates 40o2725.7N and 50o1031.4E of the Zira area for chemical analysis and planting purposes. The soil sample brought on 18 May  was prepared for conducting experimental experiments. One-year seedlings of salinity-resistant Eldar pine and olive species were planted in pots mixed with compost for comparative research aims.
The compost used for planting was prepared based on plant materials from the Dendrology Garden and was 18 months old.
Based on the consequences of the studies carried  out on the saline soils of the Zira area, it can be noted that it is advisable to conduct additional scientific research for the purpose of introducing and adapting salinity-resistant plant species on a larger scale.
