Today is Independence Day in Azerbaijan
On 28 May, 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first secular democratic state in the Muslim East, was established.
Founded by Mahammad Amin Rasulzadeh and his comrades, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was the first parliamentary republic in the Turk and Islamic world, the first democratic, legal, secular state.
The first head of the Azerbaijani provisional government was Fatali Khan Khoyski. After operating in Tbilisi for 10 days, the National Council was moved to Ganja. Only on 15 September, 1918, after the Caucasian Islamic Army cleared Baku of Dashnak-Russian forces, did the national government move from Ganja to Baku.
The independent Azerbaijan Republic achieved great achievements during its 23-month existence. For the first time in the Muslim East, women were given the right to vote, gender equality was ensured, a national army and a National Bank were established, and a national currency was introduced. Crucial steps were also taken towards democratization and the organization of free elections. The establishment of international relations and the de-facto recognition of Azerbaijan's independence by the international community, ensuring the integrity of Azerbaijan, implementing economic reforms and other works were the historical successes of the independent Azerbaijan Republic.
On 9 November, 1918, the tricolor state flag of the Azerbaijani People's Republic was adopted based on the proposal of M.A.Rasulzade.
The Azerbaijani People's Republic was able to maintain its existence in tense and complex socio-political conditions for only 23 months. Our national state was invaded by Bolshevik Russia before it was even two years old, temporarily losing its place on the political map of the world. Despite being overthrown by the Bolsheviks, the idea of independence was never defeated, and with the collapse of the Soviet Empire in 1991, Azerbaijan regained its independence.
Independence Day was called Republic Day from 1991 to 2021. At the plenary session of the Milli Majlis on 15 October, 2021, a new law "On Independence Day" was adopted. On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev approved the law "On Independence Day". With the approval of the law, May 28 - Republic Day - was renamed and declared Independence Day.
